About American Shorthair

Temperament

Happy Medium for everything

Height

Medium to large

Weight

11-15 pounds (Male), 8-12 pounds (Female)

Life Expectancy:

15 to 20 years

Nutrition

A complete and balanced cat food should be sufficient for their needs. However if it puts on too much weight, get the cat a weight controlling formula.

Trainability

Easily trainable to use the litter box and learns what you do not want it to do.

Exercise

Requires a moderate amount of exercise. However this exercise is not high intensity as it can be as simple as walking or playing with a string. Laser pointers will also do the trick. My cat likes chasing rubber bands up the stairs and brings it back.

Grooming

Comb the cat a couple times per week. This removes dead hair and redistributes skin oils to keep the coat shiny and prevent dry, itchy skin.

Health

Their flat face makes the breed more susceptible to ocular and respiratory issues. They are genetically predisposed to mouth and gum disease so watch out for that.

Traits

American Shorthair cats are like Goldilocks. They are a moderate size and they are not overly cuddly but they aren't distant either. Don't let that fool you though as they are loving cats. They adapt well with other animals and people. They have muscular legs that provides them with agility and endurance. They have a medium to large head, medium-sized ears and large, wide eyes that come in several colors. Their fur comes in many different colors or patterns yet silver or silver-brown is the most common.
